Biography
Victoria Genberg's work has two seemingly disparate sides that are, in fact, related. One side deals with power dynamics, and the other is nature-oriented. Since nature is an antidote to all the emotional stress we experience in the power world, it brings healing. This healing is necessary for those whose pain increases their need for excessive power.
Genberg chooses her medium according to what is most appropriate for a particular project. What is perhaps most characteristic is her free-flowing, expressive mark-making. While living in Hong Kong, she was introduced to Chinese ink painting, which significantly impacted her work that resulted in a fusion of East and West sensibilities. However, her latest project on Narcissism explored the expressive qualities of photography and sound to communicate her message.
Genberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, but has lived many years in Switzerland and now divides her time between Verbier, Switzerland, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After a BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York, she moved to Hong Kong to complete her MFA at the Hong Kong Art School's combined long-distance program from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Melbourne, Australia). In graduate school, Genberg’s project Simplicity focused on deconstructing the various mediums of art down to an immersive light experience. Genberg's work has been exhibited in New York, Hong Kong, Miami, Verbier, and other cities.
